McCarthy has no regrets over Liverpool snub

Alex McCarthy says he has no regrets about snubbing a move to Liverpool in order to join QPR.

And the goalkeeper has insisted he will still believe he made the right decision even if struggling Rangers go down this season.

“Definitely. But we’ll see what happens – hopefully that won’t be the case,” he said.

“A lot of people have asked how I could turn down a Champions League team. It was a tough decision – the toughest I’ve had to make in football.

“Rob Green’s fit again. Alex McCarthy was excellent, so I’m very lucky – I’ve got three good keepers at the club including Brian Murphy as well.”

“But with myself still being young, the main thing was playing games.”

McCarthy, 24, knows Brendan Rodgers from the Liverpool manager’s time at Reading, but Rangers were still able persuade him to join them from the Royals

And having had to wait for his debut, he was impressive in the dramatic 3-2 defeat against Liverpool last time out.

He is therefore expected to keep his place against Aston Villa this evening, even though Rob Green is available again after illness.

“It was a debut I won’t be able to forget. I’m hoping this game will be more straightforward – a nice 1-0 and a clean sheet will do,” McCarthy said.

Under-pressure R’s boss Harry Redknapp will be without midfielders Joey Barton and Jordon Mutch, who are still unavailable, while Sandro is hoping to overcome a groin problem in time to play.

Rangers are confident Nedum Onuoha will be passed fit after a hamstring strain, but Niko Kranjcar has been struggling with a virus.

Forward Eduardo Vargas looks likely to start, having come on and scored twice against Liverpool.
