Redknapp defiant after gut-wrenching loss

Harry Redknapp praised his players after their gut-wrenching defeat against Liverpool and insisted he is the best man to lead QPR away from the bottom of the table.

The Rangers manager’s position has been under scrutiny, with former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood discussed as a possible replacement if results do not improve and Redknapp’s close friend Tony Pulis also linked with the job.

But Rangers were much-improved, with summer signing Eduardo Vargas scoring two late equalisers before Steven Caulker’s last-gasp own goal meant Liverpool won an amazing match 3-2.

Redknapp was unhappy that the winning goal came after his team had pushed forward for a free-kick, but he felt their overall performance was QPR’s best during his time at the club and was particularly encouraged by Vargas’ electrifying contribution.

And he again dismissed speculation about his future.

“No-one could do a better job than me at the moment,” he said. “I hear other names mentioned. They couldn’t do better than me.

“I couldn’t give a monkeys about speculation. Do you think I’m worried about silly people writing rubbish? I’m not interested. They can write what they want.

“I’ve got no doubt we’ll be okay, and the little boy Vargas coming on has given me even more confidence.

“He’s come on and scored two goals – he also scored two for Chile in midweek.

“He looks like he could be a good player for us. It’s going to be hard to leave him out now.”

Vargas hauled Rangers level with his first goal for the club and then equalised again in injury time only for Liverpool to regain the lead once more.

Redknapp added: “We were great today. I’ve got a good set of lads here.

“That was the best I’ve seen us play since I’ve been at the football club and I’m including last year in the Championship.

“You don’t always get what you deserve in life and we didn’t get what we deserved today. To get beat was an absolute injustice.”
