Keeper Smithies having medical ahead of QPR move

Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Alex Smithies is having a medical ahead of his planned move to QPR.

The 25-year-old discussed personal terms on Monday after Rangers agreed a deal with Huddersfield, and he now looks set to complete his transfer to Loftus Road.

He was left out of the Terriers squad for their Championship game against Blackburn on Saturday after Rangers made an approach.

QPR lined up Smithies after failing to agree a fee with Southend United for the League One club’s highly-rated keeper Daniel Bentley.

Both men were targeted to compete for Rob Green’s place rather than replace him, as the R’s have been looking for a keeper since Alex McCarthy’s departure for Crystal Palace.

However, having recently been tipped to make a move to re-sign Green, West Ham have enquired about his potential availability.

Green, 35, left Upton Park to join the R’s in 2012. He has a year remaining on his contract.
