Chery plays as Rangers are held by Newport

New signing Tjaronn Chery made his first appearance for QPR as they were held to a goalless draw by League Two Newport County in their penultimate pre-season friendly.

The Dutchman played the first 45 minutes at Rodney Parade before making way for Matty Phillips.

Rangers were, however, without Charlie Austin, who missed the game with a groin injury. Leroy Fer, Yun Suk-Young, Armand Traore and Karl Henry were also ruled out, while Jamie Mackie, Ben Gladwin and Samba Diakite rested as they were carrying knocks.

Newport’s Lenell John-Lewis and Rangers’ Sebastian Polter both squandered early chances, while another of QPR’s summer arrivals, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, forced Joe Day into a good save midway through through the first half.

At the other end, Rob Green kept out efforts from John-Lewis and Scott Boden.

Fewer chances were created in a second half punctuated by regular substitutions from both sides, though Phillips had the ball in the net late on but was adjudged offside.

QPR:  Green (Lumley 46), Furlong (Comley 74), Wise, Caulker, Kpekawa, Luongo (Doughty 46), Faurlin, Chery (Phillips 46), Emmanuel-Thomas, Polter, Hoilett (Grego-Cox 70).
Subs not used: Kakay, Onuoha.
