Excellent QPR unlucky not to win at Leeds

QPR produced an excellent performance at Elland Road and were unlucky not to win.

Ian Holloway’s team had three chances in the opening quarter of an hour, defended well during a spell of first-half Leeds pressure, and dominated the second half but were unable to find the net.

Their first opportunity came when Darnell Furlong flicked on Luke Freeman’s corner and Conor Washington was just unable to add the finishing touch.

When another Freeman corner was cleared as far as Jake Bidwell, the left-back’s cross was headed over by former Leeds man Matt Smith.

Washington then collected Massimo Luongo’s pass and brilliantly turned away from a defender to leave himself through on goal but was denied by former R’s keeper Rob Green, who was making his 600th career appearance.

Rangers then had to defend for a spell and Alex Smithies produced a good save to keep out Alfonso Pedraza’s shot.

But the visitors remained a threat and Smith sent a looping header onto the top of the net from Furlong’s long throw.

And they continued to trouble promotion-chasing Leeds during an often one-sided second half in which Furlong fired wide, Green gathered Freeman’s header and the lively Washington was again unable to finish after a superb piece of skill.

This time Washington turned away from Kyle Bartley after Bidwell had headed the ball forward, but the striker saw his curling effort drift narrowly wide.
