Striker ‘gamble’ has paid off – Redknapp

Harry Redknapp believes he made the right decision in bringing veteran striker Javier Chevanton to QPR.

Injuries to Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora prompted Redknapp to accept a chance to sign the Uruguay international, who was a free agent after leaving Italian club Lecce and keen to secure a move to England.

The Rangers boss admitted shortly afterwards that bringing in Chevanton on a short-term deal was “a gamble” he wasn’t sure would pay off.

But the player has impressed in training and Redknapp declared: “The boy Chevanton has looked decent. I’ve been pleased with him.

“He looks like he could be a little goalscorer for us. He’s been a top player and he looks like he’s still got it.”

Chevanton has so far made only a brief appearance as a substitute during Rangers’ recent home win against Barnsley.

But Redknapp believes he will feature in the coming weeks and would have used him more up until now had injuries to other players during matches not forced him to abandon plans to bring Chevanton off the bench.

Redknapp said: “Sometimes you take a little gamble with someone and he’s been around, is 33, and we brought him in on a very small contract.

“But he’s up for it. He works hard, trains hard and still looks sharp. He still looks like he’s got a lot to offer.”
