Defoe has still got it, insists QPR boss

QPR boss Harry Redknapp is convinced Jermain Defoe would still score goals in the Premier League.

Rangers have been planning to sign the 32-year-old when the transfer window reopens in January since being unable to negotiate his release from FC Toronto in the final hours of the previous window.

And Redknapp believes Defoe, who played under him at Tottenham and Portsmouth, has plenty to offer despite his age and some injury problems.

“I still think he’ll score goals if he gets the chances,” said Redknapp, who wants to bring at least one forward to Loftus Road.

However, on Friday he insisted that a deal to sign Defoe has not yet been agreed.

Chairman Tony Fernandes is keen to sign the player and has been in discussions with his current club, who did not want to let Defoe go ahead of this year’s Major League Soccer play-offs.

“It comes down to what the deal is and whether the chairman feels it’s a deal worth doing,” Redknapp said.

“Only the chairman would deal with that side of it. I wouldn’t know where, if anywhere, we are with it.”
