Deal for ‘clever’ Zarate not done – Redknapp

Harry Redknapp says QPR have not yet completed a deal to sign Mauro Zarate on loan from West Ham.

Zarate, who had a spell on loan at Birmingham City in 2008 and has also played for Lazio and Inter Milan, has had a medical ahead of a possible temporary move to Loftus Road.

The 27-year-old has failed to make an impact at West Ham since joining them in the summer and is one of a number of options Rangers boss Redknapp has been considering.

“It’s not done and dusted. It’s something we’re interested in – we’re looking for a couple of loans,” Redknapp said.

“He’s a number 10 and a clever player. I first came across him when he was playing for Birmingham a few years back.”

Rangers are looking to bring in at least one striker during the January transfer window.

They have been hugely reliant on top scorer Charlie Austin, while Bobby Zamora’s appearances have been restricted by an ongoing hip condition and Eduardo Vargas has mostly featured on the right-hand side.

“It’s important because you need somebody else as well [as Austin],” Redknapp added.

“You need different people to score as you can’t be relying on Charlie to get all the goals.

“It’s an area we’re looking at but it’s difficult. Who is going to loan you a striker that’s going to get you 10 or 12 goals between now and the end of the season?

“Everyone’s looking for a striker. It’s difficult to find them.”
