Cardiff aim to wrap up signing of Smith

Cardiff City are hoping to finally clinch the signing of Tommy Smith.

West London Sport revealed earlier this month that Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay was hoping to capture Smith, 32, as well as Heidar Helguson from QPR.

Helguson recently agreed a move to the Championship club, who have also completed the signing of defender Matt Connolly from the R’s.

Now Mackay is trying to persuade Smith to make the move to Wales. The pair know each other well from their time together at Watford.

QPR boss Mark Hughes confirmed this week that an offer for Smith from Cardiff had been accepted, but that the deal “hasn’t really progressed” as the player considered his options.

But there appeared to be some progress on Tuesday, with Smith’s future looking likely to be decided shortly.

A number of other clubs have expressed an interest in the player, who moved to Loftus Road from Portsmouth in 2010 and whose career has included two spells at Watford.
