Bond eyes ‘amazing’ promotion after win

Kevin Bond has insisted that QPR have enjoyed a good season and that promotion via the play-offs would be an “amazing achievement” for the club.

Rangers ended the regular season with a 3-2 win at Barnsley and will now face Wigan over two legs for a place in the play-off final at Wembley.

They were widely tipped to gain automatic promotion following more heavy spending, but assistant boss Bond does not believe they have underachieved.

He said: “We had a particularly good first half of the season, but we have never been a prolific goalscoring team.

“I don’t think anything’s gone wrong, even though people might have an opinion on what they perceive we should be doing this season.

“If we can get ourselves promoted this season in any way, shape or form, I think it would be an amazing achievement.

“We’re going to have Wigan and it’s going to be very difficult. I expect a really tight contest.”

Charlie Austin scored his 100th career goal and Yun Suk-Young his first QPR goal as they picked up three points at Oakwell, where a number of key players did not feature.

Bond explained: “We had a much-changed side and needed to have one eye on whoever we’re going to play next Friday in the play-offs, so we did what we thought was the right thing.”
