Whiley and Lapthorne ease through in British Open

Whiley Lapthorne British Open

Jordanne Whiley and Andy Lapthorne both made quick progress at the British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships on the first day’s play at Nottingham Tennis Centre.

Defending champion Whiley eased past Germany’s Katharina Kruger 6-0 6-2 in the women’s singles, while Lapthorne moved into the last eight of the quad singles with a 6-0, 6-1 crushing of Ashley Davis.

Ickenham-based Whiley, who beat Aniek van Koot in last year’s final, said: “It was a solid win and I’m glad to get it done.

“It’s nice to be on the hard courts as it suits my game. I can use my speed around the court and I feel like I did that well.

“Coming in as defending champion is a new experience for me and does add some pressure but I’m looking forward to the week and am glad to start off with a good win.”
