Whiley eases past Shuker in Wimbledon quarter-final

Jordanne Whiley Wimbledon 2015

Jordanne Whiley cruised into the semi-finals of the Wimbledon wheelchair singles with a 6-1 6-1 victory over Paralympics doubles partner Lucy Shuker.

Ickenham-based Whiley, the world number three, got off to a terrific start, breaking three times to lead 5-0 in the opening set.

A double fault allowed Shuker, ranked five places below her, to get on the board but Whiley eventually completed the job.

The pair traded breaks at the beginning of the second set before Whiley – the current US Open singles champion – raced clear and got over the line despite seeing several match points go begging.

Although her serving was inconsistent, she hit 29 winners to Shuker’s eight, which proved the difference between the two Brits.

Whiley now meets Aniek van Koot in the semis, after the Dutchwoman beat Yui Kamiji in a tight three-set tussle.

Whiley and Kamiji will again link up to defend their Wimbledon doubles crown, beginning on Friday.
