Whiley beaten in singles at Roland Garros

Ickenham’s Jordanne Whiley lost her French Open singles quarter-final to Jiske Griffioen on Wednesday.

World number five Whiley had only beaten Griffioen once in their previous 20 matches and once again the Dutchwoman prevailed.

Griffioen, the world number two and current Australian Open singles champion, emerged victorious 6-4 7-5, her second win over Whiley in six days.

But Whiley will hope for better fortunes in the doubles when she and her partner Yui Kamiji defend their Roland Garros title against Charlotte Famin of France and Sharon Walraven of the Netherlands.
