Whiley and Lapthorne win in British Open

Hillingdon’s Jordanne Whiley and Andy Lapthorne booked their places in the quarter-finals of the British Open wheelchair tennis championship on Wednesday.

Fresh from her Wimbledon doubles triumph, Whiley defeated veteran Michaela Spaanstra of the Netherlands 7-5, 6-2 at the Nottingham Tennis Centre.

The Ickenham-based star said afterwards: “It wasn’t the greatest match I’ve ever played but I got through it in two sets.

“I’m a bit tired after being on the grass all week at Wimbledon and coming back onto a different surface takes a little bit of adjustment.”

World number three Lapthorne, from Eastcote, saw off his London 2012 silver medal-winning quad doubles partner Peter Norfolk, who was playing only his second competitive match in two years.

Norfolk took the first set but Lapthorne recovered to prevail 2-6, 6-4, 7-6.

“I didn’t play well, I was just trying to get the ball back and find a way to win,” said Lapthorne, who now faces Japanese seventh seed Mitsuteru Moroishi for a place in the semi-finals.

However, Ickenham’s Marc McCarroll lost his second round match 6-1, 7-5 to Takashi Sanada but will hope to advance in the men’s doubles quarter-finals on Thursday.
