Silver and bronze for Lapthorne and McCarroll in Tokyo

Eastcote’s Andy Lapthorne had to settle for silver in the quad event at the World Team Cup after Australia beat Great Britain in Friday’s final, while there was bronze for Ickenham’s Marc McCarroll.

Lapthorne (pictured above, left) had two shots at clinching the gold for Britain, after team-mate Jamie Burdekin had won the opening singles rubber.

However he was beaten by world number one Dylan Alcott 6-2 6-4, leaving the tie poised at 1-1 and the title to be decided by the doubles match.

Lapthorne and Burdekin teamed up together but Alcott and Heath Davidson proved too strong, winning 6-3 6-4.

“I’m gutted to have lost,” Lapthorne said. “We had big hopes coming into the tournament and desperately wanted to win another world title.

“Fair play to the Aussies though, they were the better pairing on the day. It hurts now but we need to use this as motivation for Rio.”

Victory for McCarroll helped Britain defeat the Australians in the play-off for bronze in the men’s event.

He set them on their way with a 6-1, 6-1 thrashing of Keegan Oh Chee before 18-year-old Alfie Hewett dispatched Ben Weekes to guarantee the medal.
