Edmund stuns Simon at Queen’s for career-best win

Kyle Edmund became the third Briton to reach the second round of this year’s Aegon Championships at Queen’s Club after a superb victory over eighth seed Gilles Simon on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old raced through a deciding set 6-1 to join Andy Murray and Aljaz Bedene in the last 16.

It was the best win of Edmund’s career to date, as he bridged a ranking gap of 67 places to defeat the Frenchman.

Simon is the third seed to go out at the first hurdle, after Richard Gasquet exited on Monday and Stan Wawrinka followed him on Tuesday.

There was no such luck though for Dan Evans, who was beaten by world number 60 Paul-Henri Mathieu.

The first two sets both went to tie-breaks, the Frenchman taking the first 10-8 before Birmingham’s Evans pinched the next 8-6.

However, Mathieu took the decider 6-3 to set up a second-round clash with Edmund.

Third seed Milos Raonic now poses the biggest threat to Murray, after he took the deciding set of his match against Nick Kyrgios, held over from Tuesday.

There were also victories for seventh seed John Isner, whose booming serve proved too hot for Juan Martin Del Potro in a 7-6 6-4 win, and fifth seed Marin Cilic.

The Croat defeated Janko Tipsarevic to become one of only two players guaranteed a quarter-final berth – he meets America’s Steve Johnson in the last eight.
