Gould edges through in German Masters

Pinner’s Martin Gould survived a strong challenge from teenage amateur Ashley Carty on Wednesday to reach round two of the German Masters.

World number 26 Gould asserted himself early on with breaks of 76 and 52 to open up a 2-0 lead.

But Carty, who beat world number 16 Robert Milkins on his way to qualifying for the event, wasn’t overawed and responded by taking the next two frames.

A break of 47 helped Gould go into a 3-2 lead but Carty won a scrappy sixth to level again.

However, 33-year-old Gould showed his class with a break of 79 in frame seven and made the most of two visits to the table in the next one to clinch the match.

He will face either UK Championship runner-up Judd Trump or world number 22 Michael Holt in Thursday evening’s second round.
