Putney’s Joe Joyce enjoyed a convincing win on his professional debut, stopping Ian Lewison in the eighth round.

The Olympic silver medallist, who won British, Commonwealth and European titles during a glittering amateur career, controlled the heavyweight clash at the Indigo O2.

Having turned pro at the age of 32, Joyce is being fast-tracked in the paid ranks – and a scheduled 10-rounder against the seasoned Lewison was seen as an unprecedented risk for a debutant.

But Brixton’s Lewison, whose previous fight was against world title contender Dillian Whyte, was peppered with shots from the outset.

The bout was eventually stopped when Lewison’s corner threw in the towel as Joyce continued to unload after staggering his groggy opponent with a heavy shot.

“It was really good to get the first one out of the way,” said Joyce, who is promoted by former world champion David Haye.

“He took a beating. I’m pleased with my performance. On to the next one now.”
