DeGale to defend title against Medina next month

Boxing - Intercontinental Super Middleweight Contest - James DeGale v Marco Antonio Periban - Liverpool Echo Arena

James DeGale will defend his IBF super-middleweight title against Mexico’s Rogelio Medina on 30 April.

The fight is set to take place in the United States on the same bill as Badou Jack’s clash with Lucien Bute for the WBC belt.

DeGale beat Bute on points in the first defence of the title he won by beating Andre Dirrell last year.

Medina, 27, is the Harlesden man’s mandatory challenger and DeGale hopes to face the winner of the Jack-Bute fight in a unification showdown later this year.

Thirty of Medina’s 36 career wins have been by knockout. One of his six losses was a points defeat against Jack in 2013.

Jack has also beaten DeGale’s arch-rival and fellow West Londoner George Groves, who failed in his third attempt to capture a world title when he lost to the American on points last September.
