Ouseph progresses in Hong Kong Open

Rajiv Ouseph moved into the second round of the Hong Kong Open on Wednesday with victory over home qualifier Angus Ng Ka Long.

Hounslow’s world number 31 emerged triumphant in three games, winning 21-13, 14-21, 21-11 in 53 minutes.

The opening exchanges were tight with the two players locked at 10-10 in the first game, but Ouseph reeled off seven points in a row to take charge before sealing it at the second time of asking.

Ng, ranked four places below Ouseph, struck back in similar fashion in the second game. At 12-11 up, he won seven of the next eight points and take it to a decider.

There was nothing to choose between them at 7-7 in the third game but it was the west Londoner who seized the initiative by taking six straight points to open up a healthy lead, and from 16-11 powered through to win the match.

Ouseph will now take on world number two, and the tournament’s top seed, Chen Long in the second round on Thursday, at 5.45am UK time.
