Hickey leaves Hampton to join Stones

Wealdstone have signed midfielder Tom Hickey from west London neighbours Hampton and Richmond Borough.

The 21-year-old, a long-time target of Stones boss Gordon Bartlett, leaves the Beveree after 99 appearances in three years at the club.

His last game for Hampton came against Wealdstone in the Middlesex Senior Cup final last month, when he scored the winner from 30 yards.

He could have been playing for the Stones by that stage, after turning down an offer during last season, but is now keen to return to the Conference South, having played there with Hampton in 2011-12.

Hickey said: “It was always going to be a difficult decision to leave as I have many really good memories from my time at Hampton and Richmond.

“I felt I had to take the chance to play at a higher level. Everyone that knows me knows I am ambitious.

“I turned down the chance to play for Wealdstone earlier in the season but with them now a Conference South club I felt I owed it to myself to give it a go there.

“I’m excited by the challenge but of course wish Hampton every success next season.”

Hickey is the third addition to the Wealdstone squad in a week after the signings of defender Carl Martin and forward Tom Collins.

Hampton and Richmond, who have also lost striker Dave Tarpey to Conference South side Maidenhead, say they hope to make three new signings before the weekend.
