Bolasie helps club that paid him in burgers

Former Hillingdon Borough winger Yannick Bolasie said he was keen to come to the aid of his old club and prevent them from going to the wall.

Struggling Borough announced on Tuesday afternoon they had resigned from the Spartan South Midlands League Division One – the 10th tier of English football.

In a tweet, the Ruislip-based club said: “A sad sad day to see a historic club pull out of football. But when your hands are tied and your [sic] being treated this way, it’s all we can do.”

That prompted a phone call from Everton star Bolasie – who had a brief spell with Hillingdon 10 years ago – and a few hours later, Borough confirmed they were back in business.

Bolasie, who is currently sidelined with a long-term knee injury, said he wanted to give something back to his old side.

“I’m always happy to help out one of my former clubs,” the Frenchman told Everton’s website.

“They are in need of support at the moment so I just wanted to chip in.

“It’s true they used to pay me in burgers. There were plenty of stories like that back in the day.”

Borough chairwoman Dee Dhand described Bolasie’s assistance as “moral support” and insisted the issue was not financial.
