Middlesex’s Roland-Jones suffers stress fracture in back

Middlesex bowler Toby Roland-Jones has suffered a stress fracture in his back, scans have revealed.

The 29-year-old went off injured in the middle of an over towards the end of the first day’s play in the County Championship Division One match with Lancashire at Lord’s on Tuesday.

He will now miss his side’s final game of the season at Somerset but will also be a major doubt for England’s Ashes tour of Australia.

The squad is due to be announced on Wednesday (27 September).

Roland-Jones made his Test debut against South Africa in July and has taken 17 wickets in four matches, at an average of 19.64.

His injury could open the door to Middlesex team-mate Steven Finn, who has been tipped for a recall.
