Robson back in the runs in Middlesex draw

Sam Robson made his first half-century in 14 innings as Middlesex’s Championship match at Trent Bridge petered out into a draw.

The erstwhile England opener, who averaged 21 since making 178 against Durham at Lord’s in May, batted throughout a truncated final day to prevent any chance of a Nottinghamshire win.

Middlesex began the day 38 runs behind but with all 10 second innings wickets in hand, and three interruptions for bad weather meant only 45 overs were possible.

James Harris, who opened as a nightwatchman to see out the final two overs of the day on Tuesday, went on to make 44 as he and Robson all but guaranteed a draw with a stand of 83.

Harry Gurney trapped Harris lbw but Nick Compton made 36 not out while Robson finished unbeaten on 77.

It is Middlesex’s fifth draw in 10 Championship matches and leaves them in second, 24 points behind leaders Yorkshire who have a game in hand.
