No play possible for Middlesex due to rain

Rain wiped out the entire first day’s play of Middlesex’s County Championship clash with Sussex at Merchant Taylors’ School.

The umpires did have a brief inspection in the morning before bringing lunch forward.

But there was barely any let-up in the rain at Northwood and play was abandoned shortly after tea without a ball being bowled.

Middlesex, who have won all three of their previous home Championship games this season, are hoping to extend their lead over second-placed Somerset.
