Middlesex match with Sussex abandoned

Middlesex v Sussex, match abandoned
(Middlesex 5 pts, Sussex 5 pts)

Middlesex suffered their first four-day washout in more than 15 years after the umpires declared the Merchant Taylors School outfield to wet for play.

Although the skies were clearer first thing on Thursday, the persistent rain which had wiped out the first three days had saturated the ground.

An early lunch was taken while two separate inspections were carried out, but the umpires conceded defeat just after 1pm.

It is the first time Middlesex have lost an entire County Championship game to rain since April 1999, when the Lancashire match at Lord’s fell victim to the weather.

Both teams will be awarded five points apiece.
