Middlesex hail Robson after Test call-up

Middlesex opener Sam Robson has been backed for a long and successful Test career after receiving his first call-up to the England squad.

The 24-year-old, who was born in Australia but has lived in London for the past seven years, is one of three uncapped players in a 12-man squad for next week’s first Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s.

Robson averages 51 for Middlesex this season and impressed selectors while playing for England Lions last winter in Sri Lanka.

He is now in line to make his Test debut at his home ground, opening the batting alongside England captain Alastair Cook.

Robson spoke of his ambitions of playing for his adopted country ahead of this season – and has been tipped by his club to be a part of England’s long-term plans.

Middlesex chief executive Vinny Codrington said: “Sam richly deserves this opportunity at this stage of his career, as due reward for all the hard work and dedication he has shown in pursuing a career in England with Middlesex.

“As a club, Middlesex is hugely proud of the history we’ve had of developing players for the international stage and Sam is one of a long production line of cricketers to have gone on to represent their countries at Test level, following hot on the heels of Steven Finn and Eoin Morgan in more recent times.

“We would like to wish Sam all the very best of luck in the forthcoming series and hope that this is the beginning of a long and successful international career with England.”

Sussex paceman Chris Jordan and Worcestershire batsman Moeen Ali are the other two uncapped players in the squad, while Yorkshire bowler Liam Plunkett has been chosen ahead of Middlesex’s Finn.
