Flat Middlesex beaten by Surrey in T20

Middlesex 117-7 (20 ov) lost to Surrey 121-4 (18.4 ov) by six wickets

Middlesex’s miserable T20 Blast campaign continued as they suffered their fifth straight defeat at The Oval.

Once again they failed to ignite with the bat, Dawid Malan top scoring with 48 not out as they posted 117-7 in 20 overs.

That total was boosted by 46 runs in the final four overs but it was overhauled by a steady Surrey batting display.

Hashim Amla made 39 and Gary Wilson struck 25 from 17 balls as the hosts won with eight balls to spare.

It was a familiar tale for the Panthers, with Malan’s performance at the top of the order not being matched by those further down.

Paul Stirling went first ball in the second over, Adam Rossington quickly followed and Joe Denly (14) and Neil Dexter (10) couldn’t go on to decent scores after making starts.

Dan Christian again failed with the bat and Middlesex looked like failing to make it beyond 100 as they were 71-6 after 16 overs.

But late blasts from Malan and Toby Roland-Jones (30 from 21 balls) helped Panthers up to a defensible total.

Steve Finn kept things tight, conceding just 12 runs in his three overs, but Amla and Jason Roy (26 from 27 balls) upped the tempo as Surrey reached 47-0 in the seventh over.

Panthers hit back by removing Roy and Steven Davies to slow Surrey down a little at 61-2 after 10 overs.

However, Amla and Wilson found boundaries at crucial times to get the home side closer and, although both fell, Kevin O’Brien and Azhar Mahmood finished it off.
