Finn agrees new contract with Middlesex

Recalled England bowler Steven Finn has signed a new three-year deal at Middlesex.

The 25-year-old, who made his first-class cricket debut back in 2005, will remain at Lord’s until at least the end of the 2017 season.

The Middlesex agreement runs alongside Finn’s central contract with the ECB.

Finn is fourth on the list of wicket-takers in County Championship Division One this season, with 44 scalps in 10 matches at an average of just under 30.

That form was rewarded this week with a return to the England squad for the fourth Test against India, which begins at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Finn has not played for his country since the first Test of the home Ashes series against Australia last July and was sent home from the winter tour Down Under to iron out technical issues in his game.

After working hard throughout the close season with Richard Johnson, Middlesex’s bowling coach, Finn has hit top form again this year.

The 6’8″ paceman made his Middlesex debut at the age of 16 and by the summer of 2009 he was leading the county attack.

These performances were immediately recognised by England and that winter he was called up for the tour of Bangladesh, where he made his Test debut.

In total, Finn has taken 174 wickets in 80 matches for England across all forms of the game and helped win the Ashes in Australia in 2010-11.

On his new deal, Finn said: “I am hugely indebted to the club and the coaching structure, particularly Richard Johnson, in helping me develop in recent times. I couldn’t think of anywhere else I would want to play my cricket.”

Middlesex’s managing director of cricket, Angus Fraser, added: “Middlesex are extremely proud to have developed Steven and to have helped him achieve what he has so far in the game.

“Middlesex is his club, he offers us a great deal both on and off the field, and we are chuffed that he wants to spend at least the next period of his career with us. He is a fine bowler and a cracking young man. We love having him around and are fortunate to have him at the club.”
