Symons eyes Fulham job after superb win

Kit Symons believes his chances of getting the Fulham manager’s job on a permanent basis can only have been boosted by the 4-0 hammering of Bolton.

Goals from Hugo Rodallega, Fernando Amorebieta, Lasse Vigen Christensen and Tim Hoogland gave the Whites an emphatic first home league victory of the season.

It was their third win in four matches since Symons was placed in caretaker charge following the sacking of Felix Magath.

“That performance and that result certainly won’t do me any harm I’m sure,” the former Fulham centre-back said.

“I’m just delighted tonight. It was an excellent performance. The two things I set out to do were to galvanise the club – try to get everyone pulling together again – and start winning games of football, and on both counts we’ve managed to do that.

“It was a very big game and we needed a performance and to get the result, and we did both.

“I’m very pleased, the players are delighted as you would expect, and the fans seemed like they were having a good time, so it’s a happy place all round.

“We’ve got some fantastic players and as much as we played free-flowing football tonight, which was great to see, it was from a solid base.

“Defensively we were excellent. I think we look a much tighter defensive unit.”

The jubilant home fans certainly made their feelings clear, cheering Symons and his team off the pitch after a fine display.

“It’s a great feeling. I’ve had stadiums booing me when I was playing, so it’s great to have people cheering me,” Symons joked.

He added: “We’ve got great supporters. They’ve needed something to shout about and in the last few weeks we’ve given them that.”
