A committed Fulham performance went harshly unrewarded after they were beaten by Abel Hernandez’s late penalty.

Slavisa Jokanovic’s side dominated possession and looked hungrier than second-placed Hull, but lacked a cutting edge without ill leading scorer Ross McCormack.

Three efforts flew past the same right-hand post in the second half, with Jamie O’Hara, Tom Cairney and Scott Parker all going close.

But their industry came to nothing as Lasse Vigen Christensen’s slip led to him bringing down Moses Odubajo in the 80th minute.

McCormack, who is wanted by Middlesbrough, watched from the stands as his team-mates looked ponderous in the final third in the first half.

They did create one clear chance, seven minutes before the break, when Cairney’s low shot was palmed away by Hull keeper Allan McGregor.

Hull, who started the day second in the Championship, had earlier  squandered the first opportunity of the game when Hernandez raced clear but was denied by the advancing Whites keeper Andy Lonergan.

Fulham were again on top early in the second half, as O’Hara’s volley, Cairney’s free-kick and Parker’s drive all went past the same upright.

However Christensen’s foul on former Brentford man Odubajo allowed Hernandez to score the winner, as he squeezed the spot-kick home via Lonergan’s right palm.

O’Hara went closest to an equaliser for Fulham, but his free-kick was kept out by McGregor.
