Point edges Fulham closer to safety

Charlton 1 Fulham 1

Ross McCormack scored his 14th goal of the season for Fulham, whose point edged them closer to confirming their Championship survival.

They played well at The Valley and went ahead in the eighth minute when Matt Smith cleverly headed Michael Turner’s long ball on to McCormack, who sent a looping header over keeper Stephen Henderson.

Charlton hit back 10 minutes later. Morgan Fox whipped in a low cross and an unmarked Johann Gudmundsson was able to score from close range at the far post.

Gudmundsson then made a mess of a simple chance to put the Addicks ahead when he inexplicably failed to hit the target from Igor Vetokele’s cross.

Smith could have won it for Fulham, firing wide before seeing a header cleared off the line by Joe Gomez and then missing a sitter in the final minute, when the forward blazed over.

Fulham are now eight points clear of third-bottom Millwall with five games left to play and look virtually safe from the drop.
