Cairney scores injury-time winner for Fulham

Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips (left) and Fulham's Tom Cairney battle for the ball during the Sky Bet Championship match at Elland Road, Leeds.

Blackburn 0 Fulham 1

Tom Cairney’s 94th-minute winner against his former club earned Fulham another three points and maintained their unbeaten start.

Cairney, who left Ewood Park for Craven Cottage last summer, struck after Blackburn had failed to clear Ryan Sessegnon’s low cross.

Danny Graham wasted an early chance to put bottom side Rovers in front, firing over the bar after he had turned past Michael Madl.

Fulham didn’t come to life until the latter stages of the first half, when debutant midfielder Neeskens Kebano dispossessed Jason Lowe and saw a shot pushed behind by Blackburn keeper Jason Steele.

Kebano – signed this week from Genk – also had a chance just after the break, but this time the shot was too close to Steele who made a comfortable save.

By this time, Fulham had begun to click into gear. Matt Smith sent a header straight at Steele, while Cairney bent a shot over from outside the box.

At the other end, Graham rolled a shot wide of the far post after being played in by Ben Marshall and David Button made saves from Hope Akpan and Anthony Stokes.

The game appeared headed for a goalless draw when Cairney struck, lifting Fulham to second in the table.
