Solanke praised after Youth Cup win

Under-18s manager Joe Edwards said it was not just Dominic Solanke’s goalscoring exploits that impressed him as Chelsea reached their fourth consecutive FA Youth Cup final by thrashing Tottenham 5-2.

Solanke scored twice in an astonishing victory that saw the Blues trail 1-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate before fighting back to win 5-4 over the two legs.

Solanke made his first-team debut in the 6-0 Champions League win over Maribor last year but is not 18 until September.

Edwards told Chelsea TV: “With Dominic Solanke, he is normally playing as a nine but he did a job on the side because their right-back is a big threat an attackers have to offer defensive work.

“It is good he gets his goals because that is what he is there to do, but his work-rate was outstanding.”

Edwards was also impressed with his side’s attitude in general.

He added: “It says a bit about the sort of characters and mentality we produce in our players because you can get one-off flukes and get to finals but to do it four years in a row is really impressive.”
