Blues at fault for Adam goal – Mourinho

Jose Mourinho described Charlie Adam’s goal against Chelsea as “fantastic” but felt his team were at fault for the Stoke midfielder’s equaliser.

Stoke counter-attacked after Chelsea’s Eden Hazard went down near the edge of the penalty area and Adam, having spotted keeper Thibaut Courtois off his line, scored with a sensational left-footed strike from inside his own half.

But Blues boss Mourinho, whose team hit back to win 2-1, said their basic errors were also a factor.

He said: “It was a clear foul on Hazard but we cannot stop and wait for the referee to give it – we have to press the ball. The goalkeeper also has to anticipate, so we made a mistake.

“The basic rule for us is that when we lose possession we have to immediately react and adapt our position.

“We have to press the ball and press players who are going to receive the ball, but I think our reaction was to wait for the referee, so we didn’t react well in that situation.”

Loic Remy restored Chelsea’s lead with a simple tap in – his seventh goal of the season – and is set to continue leading the line after Diego Costa suffered a recurrence of a hamstring problem.

Mourinho said: “We have three strikers and decided since the beginning of the season to go with Diego, but we know Didier Drogba and Remy are there for us and work hard.

“It is fantastic for Remy to have played in the last two matches, to score winning goals and win very important points for us.”
