Aston Villa boss Lambert plans cautious approach at Chelsea

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has suggested that his side’s recent defeat against Arsenal means they will play cautiously at Chelsea on Saturday.

Villa won three and drew one of their opening four Premier League games and are third in the table prior to Saturday’s meeting with the table-topping Blues.

But the 3-0 home humbling against Arsenal in their last league game was an ominous sign for them ahead of their trip to Stamford Bridge.

And Lambert said: “We were too open against Arsenal.

“Sometimes that happens when you’re playing well – you think you can go out there and take anybody on.

“I’m not going to sit here and say we’re going to go there and play free-flowing attacking football. You do that and I think you’ll get beaten pretty heavily.”

Chelsea are three points clear after winning their opening four league fixtures and then drawing their last league game, at Manchester City.

“You’ve got to try and get a foothold and not be out of it before you’ve started,” Lambert added. “If we can do that, then great.

“We will get chances hopefully on Saturday and when we do, we have to take them.

“We’ll go there with nothing to lose. Nobody expects anything from us. We are up against one of the best teams in Europe.”
