Chelsea Ladies must wait for WSL title

Chelsea Ladies crushed Everton 5-2 but had their WSL title celebrations put on ice after Birmingham and Liverpool sent the race into the final weekend.

The Blues knew they would lift the trophy if they won and their rivals both lost and Rachel Williams gave them the perfect start by scoring inside the first minute.

In a frantic first 20 minutes, Yuki Ogimi saw a penalty saved but later set up Eni Aluko to double Chelsea’s lead, which was halved when Lucy Whipp netted for Everton.

The visitors equalised on 35 minutes through Nikita Parris but almost immediately Chelsea went back in front as Aluko surged forward before feeding Rachel Williams to score.

Aluko makes it 4-2 just before the break but the second half was quieter by comparison.

Hannah Blundell wrapped up the victory eight minutes from time but they weren’t able to pop the champagne corks just yet, with Birmingham beating Manchester City 2-1 and Liverpool securing a late 3-3 draw to keep themselves in the hunt.

Chelsea will be guaranteed the title if they win at Manchester City next Sunday, but any slip would let in Birmingham or Liverpool, who host Notts County and Bristol Academy respectively.
