Carver explains Cisse’s poor form

Newcastle’s assistant manager John Carver admitted Papiss Cisse was suffering a dip in confidence following the Magpies’ 1-0 defeat at Fulham.

The Senegal striker has not scored a league goal since December and has just three goals to his name in all competitions this season.

Cisse missed a glorious chance to beat Fulham keeper David Stockdale in the first half at Craven Cottage.

And Carver said: “At the moment Papiss’ confidence is down because he hasn’t scored goals.

“The pleasing thing is that he keeps getting in the positions to score. If he’s not doing that then we’ve got an issue.

“It would have been dead easy for him to sulk and be unhappy because he hasn’t been in the team, but he has worked extremely hard on the training ground, doing extra work at the end.

“If you think back to two seasons ago he could have had his own programme on Goal of the Season. Maybe he has to do a little bit more.”
