Sunderland v Chelsea player ratings

Nemanja Matic of Chelsea

Chelsea were beaten at the Stadium of Light despite having led twice. Here’s how we rated the Blues players in their 3-2 defeat.

Thibaut Courtois: 6
Made some good saves on his return from suspension but could have done better for Sunderland’s second goal.

Branislav Ivanovic: 6
Had problems defensively but was effective going forward. Set up a great chance for Diego Costa with a fine cross.

Gary Cahill: 6
A mixed afternoon for the defender, who was at fault for the opening goal but then played a key part in Costa’s equaliser.

John Terry: 5
Not the end to his long and distinguished Chelsea career that Terry would have wanted – if it turns out to be his final match for the club. He was caught out on several occasions, the second Sunderland equaliser deflected in off him, and his injury-time sending off means the skipper is suspended for the final two matches of the season.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 7
Did very well at left-back. He was solid defensively, including on one occasion when he came to Terry’s rescue, and he set up the second equaliser for Nemanja Matic.

John Mikel Obi: 5
Had a poor game in midfield, where he failed to impose himself and failed to clear his lines in the build up to two of Sunderland’s goals.

Nemanja Matic: 7
One of the midfielder’s best performances of the season. He started and finished the move which led to Chelsea’s second goal and competed well, although he could have done more to prevent Fabio Borini scoring Sunderland’s second equaliser.

Willian: 5
An off-day for the usually dynamic Brazilian, whose performance was flat. He missed an early chance and struggled to make an impact before being substituted.

Cesc Fabregas: 6
Drifted in and out of the game. Linked up nicely with Eden Hazard at times but was subdued for the most part.

Eden Hazard: 7
Continued his improved form with another sharp display. Caused Sunderland problems with his skill and movement, and he was involved in creating the opening goal.

Diego Costa: 7
Took his goal – his 16th of the season – really well. Could have scored at least one more, but he was lively throughout and led the line strongly.

Baba Rahman: 5
Not long on as a substitute for the injured Ivanovic when the Ghanaian slipped in the build up to Sunderland’s winner.
