Shakhtar v Chelsea player ratings

Chelsea were well beaten in Ukraine, where their attacking midfield trio failed to impose themselves on the game. Here’s how we rated the players in their Champions League defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Petr Cech: 9
A brilliant display from the overworked Blues keeper. Looks to be back to his very best this season and had to be to keep the score down.

Branislav Ivanovic: 7
Set up Oscar’s late goal, looked a threat going forward and had an impressive game defensively.

John Terry: 7
Made some timely interventions and was typically brave. Needed more protection from his midfield.

David Luiz: 5
Often an easy target for criticism because of his flamboyant style, but certainly did not have his best game. Caught out positionally at times and should have been tighter for the first goal – although he was unlucky with the way his half-clearance fell.

Ashley Cole: 6
Battled well enough but the left flank was often exposed and the England full-back did not make the impact he normally does.

John Obi Mikel: 6
Steady display given the circumstances. Unable to provide the defensive cover he wanted to following Lampard’s injury on a night when Chelsea’s attacking trio left him with too much ground to cover.

Frank Lampard: 6
Barely involved before a calf injury forced him out of the action on 18 minutes.

Ramires: 5
Very quiet. Unable to impose himself on the game and was often bypassed in midfield. Wasteful in possession.

Oscar: 5
Took his goal well but part of a below-par midfield that struggled to keep the ball.

Juan Mata: 5
A peripheral figure. No lack of effort but was starved of possession and the supremely talented Spaniard was unable to make much of an impact.

Eden Hazard: 6 Gave the ball away for the second goal but was lively and dangerous and was Chelsea’s best attacking threat. Could easily have had a couple of goals.

Fernando Torres: 6
Started well with some good touches but lacked support and a supply line. Faded after the interval.

Daniel Sturridge: 6
Lively when he came on and played a part in Chelsea’s goal.
