PSG v Chelsea player ratings

Chelsea were beaten 2-1 by Paris St-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie. Here’s how we rated each Blues player.

Thibaut Courtois: 8
Could have done better for PSG’s second goal but he produced important saves before that, and then prevented Zlatan Ibrahimović from scoring a potentially crucial third in injury time.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 7
Had his hands full but stuck to the task at right-back and won a number of important challenges, the pick of the bunch being when he denied Lucas in the first half.

Gary Cahill: 8
Has looked below par at times this season, but this was Cahill at his best; strong, calm and decisive – and brave when he needed to put his body in the way. The Chelsea camp can be well pleased with his performance in the absence of John Terry and Kurt Zouma.

Branislav Ivanovic: 8
Also rose to the challenge in a reshuffled defence. Has struggled badly at right-back this season but his performance alongside Cahill at centre-back was excellent.

Baba Rahman: 7
Had a very decent game at left-back. Defended well, got forward when possible and set up a great chance for Diego Costa with a first-half cross.

John Mikel Obi: 7
A mixed night for the Nigerian, but overall he did well and his away goal could prove to be crucial. He was at fault for the opening goal but atoned by equalising and he battled in midfield although PSG mostly had the upper hand.

Cesc Fabregas: 7
Needed to be disciplined and hardworking off the ball in this game and was another Chelsea player who did what was required of him.

Pedro: 7
Unspectacular but dependable and got through a fair amount of defensive work.

Willian: 8
Was never going to let Chelsea down when needed to work himself into the ground as the home side dominated possession. As always, he was relentless.

Eden Hazard: 6
Showed glimpses of his ability but once again looked a long way short of his best before being substituted. Was backed by Guus Hiddink after the game though.

Diego Costa: 7
Kept the PSG defence on their toes and was involved in the build up to Chelsea’s goal. Had a great chance to score himself in the first half.

Oscar: 6
Worked hard after replacing Hazard for the final 20 minutes.
