Free cricket sessions provided for youngsters at Westway Sports Centre

Youngsters are being offered free coached cricket sessions at Westway Sports Centre.

The sessions are being held on Wednesday evenings from 4-6pm as part of the StreetChance initiative – a national programme run by the Cricket Foundation, engaging young people from a range of backgrounds in areas affected by youth crime and anti-social behaviour.westway2

Chris Jones, the Centre’s sports development manager, explained: “The first couple of StreetChance sessions have attracted around 25 young people aged 8-15 years and numbers are growing each week.

“In addition to learning new skills, the sessions also promote the need to practice mutual respect and social interaction.

“These are skills that the young people can then apply to all aspects of their lives both on and off the field of play.”

StreetChance sessions use a fast-paced version of tape-ball cricket – a tennis ball wrapped in electrical tape – where each innings lasts for 20 balls and games last only 20 minutes

This version of the game can be played on almost any surface, negating the need for green space or a traditional cricket wicket.

Located on Crowthorne Road, W10, the Westway Sports Centre offers a range of other sports, including climbing, tennis, football, handball 5s, basketball and netball.

The cricket sessions will run every Wednesday until 2 October.
