Chelsea defender Azpilicueta backs club’s Asian Star initiative

Chelsea are urging young players to sign up for their Asian Star initiative with just over two months before the ground-breaking scheme gets under way.

Now in its seventh year, the event on Monday, 25 May aims to boost Asian participation at all levels of the game.

Blues defender Cesar Azpilicueta welcomed the scheme, which was launched in 2009 and last year attracted more than 400 young players to the club’s Cobham training ground.

“Chelsea are doing a lot of work in the community and Asian Star is another example of that,” Azpilicueta said.

“It is very important we do our bit in the community and the event gives kids a great opportunity to show what they can do to all the scouts and other people watching.

“We need to encourage more young Asian players to play football. This has been a success for many years and gives dreams to children who might not have had chances like this before.”

The event sees the best young players from each age group invited to join the Chelsea Foundation’s Football Development Centres.

Chelsea will also be inviting managers, coaches and scouts from clubs at all levels of the game to identify talented youngsters, and will work closely with coaches from the Zesh Rehman Foundation on the day, with workshops and useful information available to parents.
