Chelsea linked with France defender and Redknapp backs Sterling

Chelsea have been linked with a move for Rafa Varane after Jose Mourinho described the Real Madrid defender as ‘the best in the world’.

The Blues boss, who signed him from Lens while at Real, believes France international Varane, 20, could make a major impact at this summer’s World Cup.

And The Sun suggest he could therefore be targeted as a long-term replacement for skipper John Terry at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho said: “I think he is the best young central defender in the world. Already I think he’s the best.”

Meanwhile, QPR manager Harry Redknapp believes Raheem Sterling may have secured a place at the World Cup with his performance for England against Denmark.

The Harlesden teenager, who has caught the eye for Liverpool this season, is hoping to land a place in the squad for the trip to Brazil.

And Redknapp said: “Raheem Sterling looked lively, sharp and deceptively strong despite being smaller than most.

“It was only his second England game so he is by no means the finished article, but he has been doing really well for Liverpool so that is where he gets noticed.

“Sterling is a confident lad and comfortable on the ball and that is what England need — players who can take the ball and do something different.”
