Ray Wilkins has taken charge of the Jordanian national team.

The Hillingdon-born 57-year-old, who has spent much of his career at Chelsea and QPR, was announced as the Jordan Football Association’s choice for the job on Wednesday.

Wilkins started his career at Chelsea, where he later had spells as a coach and was widely credited with playing a key role in the club’s success.

He was sacked by the Blues in 2009, having been assistant manager under Felipe Luiz Scolari and subsequently Carlo Ancelotti.

He was a hugely popular player at QPR in a five-year spell at Loftus Road, but the club were relegated from the Premier League during his time as manager.

A year after leaving Rangers he managed Fulham but was axed in 1998. He briefly returned to Craven Cottage last season as part of former manager Rene Meulensteen’s coaching team.

Wilkins won 84 caps for his country, he later coached England’s Under-21s, and his playing career also included spells at Manchester United, AC Milan, Paris St-Germain and Glasgow Rangers.

He will be assisted in his new role by his former United team-mate Frank Stapleton, who was also briefly part of his backroom staff at QPR.

The pair will take charge after Jordan’s friendly against China next week.
