Solid Chelsea draw at Tottenham

Chelsea’s recovery continued as they kept a third consecutive clean sheet.

They played without a recognised striker at White Hart Lane but still managed to cause problems for Tottenham in an uninspiring derby.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho dropped Diego Costa and deployed Eden Hazard in a central role up front.

Hazard responded impressively and headed over from Oscar’s cross as Mourinho’s side enjoyed an early spell of pressure.

Pedro was also lively for the visitors and went close with a firm strike from near the edge of the penalty area.

Son Heung-min had a good chance for Spurs but his header from Harry Kane’s cross was saved by keeper Asmir Begovic, who kept out an effort from Moussa Dembele shortly before the interval.

Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris also did well when called into action, producing a fine save to push away Hazard’s volley midway through the second half.

The champions’ defensive shortcomings were a major factor in them losing seven of their first 12 league matches this season. But Chelsea, who were without injured captain John Terry, appeared to have turned the corner.

They defended well and Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas had the upper hand in midfield for much of the game.

Chelsea: Begovic; Ivanovic, Zouma, Cahill, Azpilicueta; Fabregas, Matic; Willian (Kenedy 88), Oscar, Pedro (Loftus-Cheek 90); Hazard.
Subs not used: Amelia, Djilobodji, Baba Rahman, Mikel, Costa.
