New contract for Terry ‘is a formality’

Jose Mourinho has insisted that John Terry signing a new contract at Chelsea is “a formality”.

The 34-year-old defender’s current deal is due to expire in the summer but manager Mourinho has confirmed there is no prospect of Terry being allowed to leave Stamford Bridge.

“There are no doubts that he is going to get another contract,” said Mourinho. “I know that and he knows that. It’s a formality.

“He is a very important player in the team so the next contract sooner or later will come. We know that.”

Chelsea’s policy is to offer only one-year contracts to players over the age of 30.

Terry, who made his Blues debut in 1998, has made 439 league appearances for the club and captained Chelsea more than 500 times in all competitions.
