Chelsea boss insists the best team won

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho insisted his side fully deserved their stunning victory at Liverpool.

The Premier League leaders had been in blistering form but were frustrated by the visitors, who were well organised an defended superbly.

Demba Ba put them ahead after a mistake by Steven Gerrard and Willian added a second when he tapped into an unguarded net as Liverpool pushed forward in injury time.

And Mourinho responded to questions about his tactics by saying: “It was a defensive display? I’m a bit confused with what the media thinks about defensive displays.

Chelsea defended superbly and took their chances.
Chelsea defended superbly and took their chances.

“When a team defends well you call it defensive display. When a team defends badly and concedes two or three goals you don’t mention a defensive display.”

Mourinho again played down his team’s title prospects, claiming they have “no chance” of being crowned champions despite being second in the table, now only two points behind Liverpool.

But he was full of praise for their performance at Anfield, where he was without a number of key players and handed Czech defender Tomas Kalas, 20, a full debut.

Mourinho said: “The best team won. The team played brilliantly. Every player was magnificent.

“It was a fantastic performance by my players and I’m very happy with them. They know how pleased I am with their work.

“Today was three important points. We need one more to finish third, and if we finish third we are in the Champions League automatically.”
