Mourinho hails duo after Chelsea victory

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho praised centre-backs John Terry and Gary Cahill after the victory against Galatasaray.

Mourinho’s side easily reached the Champions League quarter-finals as goals from Cahill and Samuel Eto’o saw them win 2-0 on the night and 3-1 on aggregate.

It meant a disappointing return to Stamford Bridge for Galatasaray’s former Chelsea star Didier Drogba, who was given a hero’s welcome by the home fans but struggled to get into the game.

Drogba was quiet on his return to SW6.

And Mourinho said: “It was difficult for Didier because of the way his team played. When his team is not there it is always difficult for a striker.

“But I have to say Gary and John put in a fantastic performance against two very good strikers. We controlled the game and never saw Didier in a dangerous position.”

Eto’o’s early goal put Chelsea in the driving seat and they never looked back after Cahill fired home from close range to double the lead.

“We were very compact and very much in control for 90 minutes. It was a good performance,” Mourinho added.

“We got a positive result in the first leg and in the second we finished the job.”

Mourinho has never lost in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and is looking forward to putting that record on the line against one of Europe’s big guns.

“We would welcome any of them as it would be good for our evolution as a team,” he said.

“It is very important for us to play against one of the best teams and it doesn’t matter who it is.”
