Mourinho: I’d be happy to keep Torres

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho insists he is happy to keep Fernando Torres for next season and expects the Spaniard to stay.

Mourinho has long made it clear he wants to bring in at least one new striker next season and has confirmed out-of-contract forward Samuel Eto’o will be moving on.

But the much-maligned Torres, who scored the winning goal against Cardiff in the final game of the season, and Demba Ba are both part of Mourinho’s plans, the Blues boss claimed.

“I think he [Fernando] will be at Chelsea,” Mourinho said. “I don’t know because the summer is a long summer. But three months without football is a lot and a lot of things can happen.

“We want to bring a striker. Fernando and Demba have contracts and I am happy with them I promise you – no problem for me if they stay at the club if they are happy and committed.

“Samuel Eto’o finishes his contract so the normal situation is that he is leaving.”

Mourinho also reiterated that he expects Ashley Cole to stay at Stamford Bridge.

Cole, whose contract expires this summer, was made captain for the day.

And Mourinho explained: “He was not the captain to say goodbye in a nice way, he was the captain because he was the player on the pitch with more years at Chelsea.

“He arrived before Branislav Ivanovic so he was the one with more time, so we gave him the armband as a consequence of that, not thinking it was his last game.”
